Todo mundo sabe que o quadro político no Brasil está confuso e instável. No meio disso as eleições se aproximam cada vez mais e algumas pessoas ainda não querem falar sobre esse tema. Nós do Clube do Monóculo acreditamos fortemente que política se discute SIM.
Porque política não é feita só por quem está no governo naquele período. É feita por todos nós. Diariamente.
Discutir política é exercer a nossa democracia.
Democracia. DEMOS, que significa “povo,” e KRATOS “ poder”, juntas as palavras formam o conceito de poder do povo.
A democracia foi conquistada à duras penas e tem que ser constantemente preservada e resignificada. Resolvemos criar essa lista de sete filmes para relembrar a fragilidade deste regime político e instigar a exercermos a nossa cidadania.
1- A Revolução dos Bichos - Animal Farm (1954)
A animação foi inspirada em um romance escrito pelo consagrado George Orwell, no ano de 1945.
A narrativa se desenvolve em uma fazenda, quando os animais insatisfeitos pela forma que eram tratados pelos donos se revoltam e tomam o poder. O autor traça paralelos com a revolução russa de 1917, satirizando os líderes totalitários da época.
O porco mais velho lembra a todos de que é preciso ficar atento para que ninguém volte a assumir o posto ditatorial dos humanos. Porém ninguém lhe dá ouvidos e isto é justamente o que acontece. Um outro porco (Napoleão) expulsa seus concorrentes e centraliza o poder. Depois da ascensão do suíno os outros animais passam a trabalhar mais e a comer menos, enquanto os porcos ficam mais autoritários. Apesar de ser um romance antigo, ele continua refletindo sobre questões bem atuais não é mesmo?
2- 1984 (1984)
Baseado em outro livro clássico de George Orwell, 1984 se passa em um futuro distópico onde o Estado impõe um regime totalitarista, controlando a população através da vigilância das câmeras do Grande Irmão que tudo vê.
Algumas pessoas não sabem mas o reality show Big Brother foi inspirado nesta história. O filme capta a essência do livro, nos fazendo levantar diversos questionamentos válidos nos dias de hoje: Até que ponto o que nos é transmitido é realidade? Seria a alienação uma forma de controle de massa?
3- O Conto da Aia - The Handmaid's Tale (1990)
O livro The Handmaid's Tale foi escrito por Margaret Atwood em 1985. Já foi adaptado para diversos formatos, sendo eles : uma ópera dinamarquesa, o filme em 1990 e recentemente a série da Hulo em 2017.
Em um universo distópico, o governo totalitarista religioso de Gilead, assume o controle e instaura novas leis de funcionamento da sociedade no qual agora é organizada por um regime ditatorial armado militarmente. O argumento deste grupo religioso para suas ações extremas é de que a poluição e a infertilidade crescente é culpa dos pecados dos seres humanos. O novo regime é instaurado aos poucos, começando pelas mulheres sendo impedidas de trabalhar, de ter propriedades em seu nome e até mesmo de ler.
Por decorrência da infertilidade a nova lei obriga as poucas mulheres férteis que cometeram algum "pecado" (como por exemplo da homossexualidade) e se tornarem uma aia, ou seja, escravas das famílias de elite com o proposito de gerar filhos para as esposas que não podem engravidar. Acompanhamos essa realidade do ponto de vista de uma das aias e apesar da série ter atingido um reconhecimento maior do que o filme ambos são interessantes de se assistir (pois foram gravados em épocas diferentes e isso nos da a perspectiva de como uma ideologia social pode mudar através dos tempos).
4- Além do Cidadão Kane - Beyond Citizen Kane (1993)
Além do Cidadão Kane é um documentário feito no ano de 1993 no intuito de discutir o monopólio midiático exercido pela emissora Rede Globo como a forma de influenciar os hábitos ideológicos, políticos e de consumo da população brasileira.
“Beyond Citizen Kane” foi produzido pela BBC britânico e dirigido por Simon Hartog. A Globo tentou comprar os direitos do filme para impedir a sua circulação. Mesmo não conseguindo fazer a compra a emissora proibiu a exibição do filme no MAM e no MIS, confiscando sua cópia. O documentário só começou a circular legalmente nos anos 2000.
O título da obra associa Roberto Marinho (fundador da Rede Globo) com o protagonista do filme “Cidadão Kane” dirigido por Orson Welles.
Na obra alguns momentos importantes para a vida política brasileira são apresentados e vemos a interferência da Globo na vida política brasileira: a distorção na cobertura do movimento “Diretas Já” na época da ditadura e a edição do debate final entre Lula e Collor em 1989.
Hoje, “Muito Além do Cidadão Kane” pode ser visto sem censura no YouTube.
5- V de Vingança - V For Vedetta (2005)
Inspirado na série de quadrinhos de mesmo nome de Alan Moore e David Lloyd, o filme conta a história de um mundo distópico governado por um governo totalitário (Fogo Nórdico) que oprime a população em um regime que faz muitas analogias a governos fascistas / nazistas.
A protagonista do filme é Evey uma garota da classe trabalhadora que conhece V, um revolucionário que esconde sua identidade através da máscara de Guy Fawkes (uma outra alusão a um momento real da história, a conspiração da pólvora).
Tanto a obra original quanto o filme se propuseram a ser um manifesto contra a tirania de governos opressores. Porém essa visão de rebeldia pode ser interpretada de diferentes formas. O V é uma figura que ostenta ideais anárquicos, ao mesmo tempo que a crítica feito ao partido Fogo Nórdico denuncia vários atitudes que não só exclusivas de governos de extrema direita como o 3º reich nazista. Várias atitudes de governos do mundo contemporâneo, como o do presidente americano George W. Bush (presidente vigente na época do lançamento do filme) ou até mesmo do governo Trump que viria acontecer 10 anos depois, podem se relacionadas com as do partido do filme Fogo Nórdico.
6- O Ano em que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias (2006)
O Ano em que meus Pais saíram de Férias se passa no ano de 1969, em plena ditadura militar. Apesar deste ser o cenário político da época o filme é retratado do ponto de vista do protagonista que é um garoto como qualquer outro entrando na pré adolescência. De maneira muito abrupta os pais do menino o levam para a casa do avô e dizem que vão sair de férias. Enquanto a narrativa começa a se desenvolver nós (pelo olhar de Mauro) começamos a perceber que há algum incômodo no qual ele não consegue nomear e vai entendendo aos poucos.
Mauro também estranha seus novos vizinhos que são bem diferentes culturalmente dele. Cao Hamburger como diretor também coloca em pauta a Copa do Mundo de 1970 por ser um grande acontecimento. Os pais do garoto na realidade não estavam de férias mas sim lutando nas guerrilhas contra a ditadura. O filme é permeado de uma sensação de tristeza por conta da situação política mas traz de forma leve uma inocência juvenil.

Baseado no livro homônimo de 1981 do autor americano Todd Strasser e no experimento social da Terceira Onda, realizado pelo professor de história norte-americano Ron Jones. O filme conta a história de um professor na alemanha que decide criar um experimento social entre seus alunos, para demonstrar quão fácil ditaduras podem surgir no mundo contemporâneo, porém o experimento acaba saindo do controle e de fato um novo movimento totalitário começa a surgir.
Por se tratar de um filme alemão é muito corajoso em denunciar os perigos de um governo totalitário e da manipulação de massa. Mesmo que a 2º guerra tenha ocorrido a muitos anos, a sombra do nazismo não sumiu completamente da Alemanha e nem do mundo. É importantíssimo para ficarmos atentos a pensamentos extremistas.

Everyone knows that the political framework in Brazil is confusing and unstable. In the middle of this, the elections are getting closer and closer and some people still do not want to talk about it. We at the Clube Do Monóculo strongly believe that politcs are very important to discuss
Because politics is not made only by those who are in government at that time. It is made by all of us. Daily.
To discuss politics is to exercise our democracy.

Democracy has been hard won and has to be constantly preserved and redefined. We decided to create this list of seven films to remind us of the fragility of this political regime and to instigate the exercise of our citizenship.
1- Animal Farm (1954)
The animation was written by the consecrated George Orwell, in the year of 1945.
The narrative develops on a farm, when the animals dissatisfied by the way they were treated by the owners are revolted and seize power. The author draws parallels with the Russian revolution of 1917, satirising the totalitarian leaders of the time.
The older pig reminds everyone that we must be careful that no one is to take up the dictatorial position of humans again. But no one listens to you and this is exactly what happens. Another pig (Napoleon) expels its competitors and centralizes power. After the rise of the swine, other animals work harder and eat less, while pigs become more authoritarian.
Although it is an old novel, it keeps reflecting on very current issues, right?
2- 1984 (1984)
Based on another classic book by George Orwell, 1984 takes place in a dystopian future where the state imposes a totalitarian regime, controlling the population through the surveillance of the cameras of the All-Seeing Great Brother.
Some people do not know but the reality show Big Brother was inspired by this story. The film captures the essence of the book, making us raise several questions valid today: To what extent is what is transmitted to us a reality? Was alienation a form of mass control?
3- The Handmaid's Tale (1990)
The book The Handmaid's Tale was written by Margaret Atwood in 1985. It has been adapted to several formats, including: a Danish opera, the film in 1990 and recently the Hulo series in 2017.
In a dystopian universe, Gilead's totalitarian religious government takes over and establishes new laws governing the functioning of society in which it is now organized by a militarily armed dictatorial regime. The argument of this religious group for their extreme actions is that pollution and increasing infertility are the fault of the sins of human beings. The new regime is introduced gradually, starting with women being prevented from working, having property in their name and even reading.
As a result of infertility, the new law obliges the few fertile women who have committed some "sin" (such as homosexuality) and become an aia, that is, slaves of the elite families for the purpose of generating children for wives who do not can become pregnant. We follow this reality from the point of view of one of the years and although the series has achieved a greater recognition than the film both are interesting to watch (because they were recorded at different times and this gives us the perspective of how a social ideology can change through the ages).
4- Beyond Citizen Kane (1993)
Beyond Citizen Kane is a documentary made in the year 1993 in order to discuss the media monopoly exercised by Rede Globo as the way to influence the ideological, political and consumer habits of the Brazilian population.
Beyond Citizen Kane was produced by the British BBC and directed by Simon Hartog. Globo tried to buy the rights to the film to prevent its circulation. Even though he could not make the purchase, the broadcaster forbade the film to be shown in MAM and MIS, confiscating his copy. The documentary only began to circulate legally in the 2000s.
The title of the work associates Roberto Marinho (founder of Rede Globo) with the protagonist of the film "Citizen Kane" directed by Orson Welles.
Some important moments in Brazilian political life are presented and we see Globo 's interference in Brazilian political life: the distortion in the coverage of the "Straight Already" movement during the dictatorship and the edition of the final debate between Lula and Collor in 1989.
Today, "Beyond Citizen Kane" can be watched uncensored on YouTube.
5- V For Vedetta (2005)
Inspired in the comic series of the same name by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, the film tells the story of a dystopian world ruled by a totalitarian government (Norse Fire) that oppresses the population in a regime that makes many analogies to fascist / nazi governments.
The protagonist of the film is Evey a working class girl who knows V, a revolutionary who hides her identity through the mask of Guy Fawkes (another allusion to a real moment in history, the gunpowder conspiracy).
Both the original work and the film set out to be a manifesto against the tyranny of oppressive governments. But this view of rebellion can be interpreted in different ways. The V is a figure that boasts anarchic ideals, while the criticism made to the Nordic Fire party denounces various attitudes that not only exclusive to right-wing governments like the 3rd Nazi reich. Various attitudes of governments in the contemporary world, such as that of US President George W. Bush (president at the time of the release of the film) or even of the Trump government that would happen ten years later, may be related to those of the movie Fire Nordic.
6- O Ano em que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias (2006)
O Ano em que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias happens the year of 1969, in full military dictatorship. Although this is the political scene of the time the film is portrayed from the point of view of the protagonist who is a boy like any other entering the pre adolescence. Very abruptly the boy's parents take him to his grandfather's house and say they are going on holiday. As the narrative begins to unfold we (by the look of Mauro) begin to realize that there is some nuisance in which he can not name and gradually understand.
Mauro also strangers his new neighbors who are very different from him culturally. Cao Hamburger as director also puts the 1970 World Cup on the agenda for being a great event. The boy's parents were not really on holiday but fighting in the guerrillas against the dictatorship. The film is permeated with a sense of sadness because of the political situation but slightly brings a youthful innocence
7- The Wave - Die Welle (2011)
Based on the 1981 eponymous book by American author Todd Strasser and the Third Wave social experiment by American history professor Ron Jones. The film tells the story of a teacher in Germany who decides to create a social experiment among his students, to demonstrate how easy dictatorships can emerge in the contemporary world, but the experiment ends up getting out of control and in fact a new totalitarian movement begins to emerge.
Because it is a German film, it is very courageous to denounce the dangers of totalitarian government and mass manipulation. Even though the Second War took place for many years, the shadow of Nazism did not disappear completely from Germany or even from the world. It is very important for us to be attentive to extremist thoughts.
